Rare 1924 Dominion of Canada $5 at show auction

With only 109 reported in existence, a 1924 Dominion of Canada $5 banknote is available at Colonial Acres’ Fall Premier Numismatic Auction this September.

Graded PMG VF-25, Lot 955 bears Campbell-Sellar signatures, with a presale estimate of $9,735.

“You can expect to see some fantastic examples of numismatics in this auction,” says Colonial’s Todd Sandham. The auction is slated for Sept. 8-9 and will be held in conjunction with the National Postage Stamp and Coin Show. Presented by Canadian Coin News and Trajan Publishing, the two-day show is open to the public Sept. 9-10 at the Hilton Mississauga. For show details, visit stampandcoinshow.com.

Viewing of the auction lots starts at 12 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8 at the Hilton. The live auction starts at 5:30 p.m. EDT, with 663 lots.

The remaining lots will be available for viewing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9, with the live auction starting at 5:30 p.m. EDT.

Other auction highlights include:

  • Lot 245 is possibly “a unique one-of-a-kind trial strike,” states the catalogue description. Struck in lead, the 1760 Canada medal features King George II’s laureate head facing left on the obverse. The reverse depicts a woman weeping at the base of a pine tree with a beaver behind the tree climbing up the bank. Colonial says the medal commemorates the fall of New France to the British on Sept. 8, 1760. It has a pre-sale estimate of $2,000.
  • Lot 519 features an 1865H 25 cents. Graded ICCS AU-50, the lot has a pre-sale estimate of $9,000.
  • Lot 660 features a 1967-dated 50-cent flip strike error. Graded ICCS MS-64, only 26 are known to exist. This lot has a pre-sale estimate of $7,500.
  • Lot 419 features a 1964 five cents with a detached jewel. PCGS graded MS-65, Colonial says this is a “extremely rare variety.” This lot has a pre-sale estimate of $6,000.
  • Lot 795 features an 1820 Blacksmith imitation Tiffin token. Graded ICCS F-12, Colonial says is listed in the Charlton tokens catalogue as “extremely rare” (Charlton No. BL32AD). Described as “seldom seen, worth a premium bid,” this lot has a pre-sale estimate of $6,000.
  • Lot 827 is a Hudson’s Bay Company ½ made beaver token without punch (Breton No. 927). “This token was issued for the East Main district on the east mainland of Hudson Bay,” states the catalogue description. “‘NB,’ meant to be MB for ‘Made Beaver,’ was a misprint by the die-cutter. The piece was given out to passengers for the first flight by TCA Trans-Canada Airways in 1958.” This lot has a pre-sale estimate of $650.
  • Lot 892 features “a rare banknote seldom offered for sale”: a 1909 Royal Bank of Canada $20 note. Graded PMG Choice F-15, this lot has a pre-sale estimate of $6,000.
  • Lot 910 features a “scarce” 1897 Traders Bank of Canada $5 graded PMG VF-20. “Overall visually appealing note, the small stain in top margin does not distract from the overall esthetics,” the description states. This lot has a pre-sale estimate of $7,500.
  • Rounding out the highlights is Lot 214, an “ultra rare” Johnson Matthey five-ounce silver bar commemorating the 25th anniversary of Speedy Print (1962-87). The bar comes housed in the original black velvet display with embroidered Johnson Matthey logo. With a mintage of only 100, this lot has a pre-sale estimate of $400.

The Colonial auction also features several lots of vintage silver bars.

Online bidding starts Aug. 18. For full details, visit, colonialacres.com/auction-s.
