FIRST SEMINAR:

St. Eligius, the Patron Saint of Numismatics with Scott Douglas

Yes, the fascinating hobby of numismatics indeed has a saint, Eligius, who was born June 11, 588 into a Gallo-Roman family. Learn about this amazing saint through Scott Douglas, the Grand Knight of the St. Eligius Brotherhood of Numismatists in Canada. Scott will share how Eligius became a master of the mint and the right hand of King Dagobert. Despite these high power positions, Eligius had a heart of gold, sharing his wealth with youth, especially the poor. Scott will share how the passion and mission of St. Eligius continue today worldwide. Scott, who recently acquired the St. Eligius Numismatic Museum assets, will also have some of these museum pieces on display.

SECOND SEMINAR

Watch out for the latest philatelic forgeries

In July, the Vincent Graves Green Philatelic Research Foundation (VGG) alerted all collectors to be vigilant before buying or bidding on essays and proofs of classic-era Canadian stamps. This warning came after new forgeries began surfacing on the internet. The VGG’s Ted Nixon and Garfield Portch will give a presentation that will focus on:

  • Which values are being forged;
  • The difference in the characteristics of a forgery vs. a genuine die proof;
  • The actual printing process being used to produce the forgeries;
  • Where the forgeries are being sold and how collectors can avoid them; and,
  • They will bring actual samples of the forgeries.
